The Greenville City Fire Department is hiring entry-level, non-certified firefighters as well as Firefighter II and III (EMT). Act fast, the application window closes Friday, January 17.

Firefighter Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for a firefighter position at GCFD, you must meet the following criteria:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • U.S. citizen

  • 18 years or older

  • EMT-Basic or higher certification (or obtained within the first year of employment)

  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license (or able to obtain one)

  • Pass pre-employment background checks (Criminal, Motor Vehicle, and Education Verification)

  • Pass pre-employment health screenings (drug, vision/hearing, psychological, stress and pulmonary function)

Hiring Process
GCFD typically hosts open hiring periods for firefighters throughout the year. During these times, candidates can apply online. You may need to provide the following documents:

  • IFSAC or Pro Board Certification in Firefighter I & II

  • Current National Registry EMT Certification

  • Military Form DD-214 (long form) Discharge Certificate

  • Current Driver’s License

After applications are reviewed and approved, candidates take an online exam. Candidates with a passing score are invited to take the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT). If you pass the CPAT, you’ll be interviewed by GCFD staff. Successful candidates will be added to our eligibility list and contacted accordingly.

Benefits and Compensation 
Based on a 53-hour work week, the starting salary for a Firefighter I/Firefighter Recruit (non-certified) is $48,048.00, while Firefighter II/III (EMT) starts at $52,852.80. See our most updated pay structure here.

Our firefighters are divided into three shifts: 24 hours on, followed by 48 hours off. All other staff typically work Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
