The City of Greenville and Duke Energy will pay up to $3,000 in financial assistance for homeowners who want to bury their service lines.

Officials say they typically see spikes in interest for the program during colder months, and after severe storms and power outages.

All you have to do is fill out the POWER ON Program Application. If approved, a Duke Energy representative will come out and meet you to determine the scope of the project, according to the City’s website.

Duke Energy says that replacing overhead power lines with underground ones strengthens the lines against potential outages and severe weather. It also shortens the amount of time it takes to get power back during a loss. The average cost for a single-family home to bury a line and update the meter base is $2,900.
